Polished Concrete Floors: Your Questions Answered

If you're considering a polished concrete floor, you probably have plenty of questions about the process, costs, and maintenance. At Premier Concrete Design, we’ve been installing polished concrete floors across the UK for years, and we get asked the same key questions time and time again.

To help you make an informed decision, we've put together this blog covering everything you need to know. And to make things even easier, we’ve created a FAQ video where we answer the most common queries—watch it below!

Frequently Asked Questions About Polished Concrete Floors

How much do polished concrete floors cost per square metre?

Polished concrete floors typically range from £100 - £200 per square metre, but the final cost depends on several factors:

  • Size of the floor – Larger floors usually have a lower price per square metre as fixed costs are spread out.

  • Location – Travel costs can have a small impact on pricing.

  • Complexity – If your project involves multiple smaller rooms, we may need to split the pour over several days, which increases the cost.

For a quick and accurate quote, send us your project plans and postcode, and we’ll get back to you promptly.

Can underfloor heating be used with polished concrete floors?

Absolutely! Polished concrete works exceptionally well with underfloor heating. Since our floors are typically 100mm thick, the heating pipes sit around 80mm from the surface, ensuring efficient heat distribution.

Once warmed up, the floor retains heat well, acting like a large radiator. In summer, polished concrete also helps keep rooms cool, making it a great all-year-round flooring solution.

At what stage of the project do you install a polished concrete floor?

One key requirement for installation is that your building is watertight—windows and doors must be installed before we begin.

Once your team has completed insulation and underfloor heating installation, we can pour your beautiful polished concrete floor.

What is the process of installing a polished concrete floor?

  1. Preparation – We install perimeter foam for expansion, protect doors, and lay crack control mesh.

  2. Pouring the floor – We arrive at 7 AM, followed by the concrete pump. The floor is screeded and power trowelled throughout the day to achieve the perfect finish.

  3. Cutting control joints – The next day, we cut expansion joints, then cover the floor so your build can continue.

  4. Final finishing – After 28 days, we return to remove the cover, sand, wash, and seal the floor—delivering a stunning, durable finish.

Will I need crack control joints in my polished concrete floor?

Yes, unless your floor is smaller than 6m in either direction, crack control joints are necessary to allow for natural expansion and contraction.

  • Joints are only 3mm thick and filled with RAL-coloured silicone, so they blend seamlessly into the design.

  • We can position them strategically under kitchen islands, stud walls, or as part of the overall aesthetic.

What colours are available for polished concrete floors?

We offer 9 standard colours, from off-white and mid-greys to warmer tones like cream and buff, as well as darker shades.

Need something unique? We also provide custom colours, allowing you to create a bespoke finish that matches your space perfectly.

Do polished concrete floors stain or scratch easily?

In short, no.

  • Stain resistance – Our modern sealers provide excellent protection. Spills like red wine, fats, lemon juice, and vinegar won’t cause issues if cleaned up promptly.

  • Scratch resistance – Polished concrete is highly durable for everyday use, but if scratches do occur, we can repair and reseal the surface.

What areas of the UK do you cover?

We install polished concrete floors nationwide, covering the entire UK. Whether you're in Wales, England, Scotland, or Northern Ireland, we can travel to your location and provide a high-quality installation.
